Economic Impact
Established in 1988 with Rs 320 million in USAID-supported federal funding, Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate was designed to shift the local economy away from poppy cultivation. Generous incentives, including tax holidays, subsidized financing, and utility concessions, attracted over 80 industries, eventually expanding to 325 units, Rs 53.8 billion in investment, and 14,843 jobs. Following the withdrawal of incentives in 1991–92, the estate declined, with only around 152 units now operating. Meanwhile, Mardan’s marble and stone industry exports about 90% of its finished tiles, highlighting untapped opportunities for higher-value local processing.
Growth Opportunities
Gadoon Amazai Economic Zone
KP Economic Zones Development & Management Company (KPEZDMC) has designated Gadoon Amazai as a special economic zone under its portfolio, alongside the Swabi Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s Common Business Facilitation Centre initiative (floated 2022), aimed at providing shared industrial testing labs and market-linkage support for steel, textile, plastics, pharmaceuticals and packaging units.
Marble Value Addition, Mardan
SMEDA proposed marble mosaic manufacturing and expanded common facility centres could shift more of the district’s marble trade from raw-tile export toward finished, higher-margin products.
Agro-Processing Potential
Both districts remain agriculture-dominant (sugarcane and tobacco in Mardan; tobacco as the leading cash crop in Swabi); cold storage and agro-processing capacity is currently limited (3 cold storage units in Mardan; 2 in Swabi) relative to output.
Banking & Finance Access
102 bank branches in Mardan and 78 in Swabi (including Islamic banking windows) provide a base for SME lending expansion, though branch density trails the province’s urban centres.
